MANSFIELD, PA – An early morning crash claimed the life of a 22-year-old Mansfield, PA., man and sent the other driver to the hospital.
Just after 5:00 AM on Friday, July 21, 2023, Mansfield Hose Company and EMS personnel responded to a reported 2-vehicle head-on crash in Richmond Township. The accident occurred along Route 6 just a short distance past Route 549 on a curve near 18262 Route 6. (Just east of Route 549).
Fire personnel arrived on scene around 5:17 AM and confirmed that one vehicle was off the roadway and one person was reported injured. Fire personnel immediately checked on both drivers and provided assistance.
The driver of the second vehicle (a truck) had refused to be treated, but later that driver was transported by Mansfield ambulance crew to Guthrie Troy Community Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The coroner was requested to the accident scene a short time later.
An additional need for traffic control brought in a crew from PennDOT. Prior to their arrival a detour was set up immediately so traffic could travel around the crash scene by using Route 549 and Hemlock Hill Road, as Route 6 was closed down at 5:26 AM.
Route 6 remained closed for several hours as Pennsylvania State Police Reconstruction Team worked to figure out the cause of the tragic crash.
The scene was turned over to Pennsylvania State Police and PennDOT personnel around 7:24 AM, which allowed Mansfield fire crews to be able to return back to their station.
