On Sunday evening, New York State Police as well as Bath Village police and the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic incident on Roosevelt Avenue in Bath. Police say a man discharged a gun inside the home before barricading himself inside. A woman who was also in the home managed to escape unharmed.
Residents in the area were evacuated and taken to a safe place as negotiators and more police units responded to the scene. Throughout the standoff, the suspect, 51 year old Larry J.Schoonover, allegedly fired at police who returned fire.
After several hours, the suspect went outside into the backyard with a shotgun. Police say the suspect allegedly fired in the direction of police, who again returned fire, this time hitting the suspect in the leg.
Schoonover was airlifted to Strong memorial Hospital where he is in police custody and listed as stable.
On Wednesday, Schoonover was charged with two counts of Attempted Murder 1st – Police Officer (A Felony), Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd (D Felony), and Reckless Endangerment 1st (D Felony). He was arraigned at Strong Memorial Hospital and remanded with no bail. Schoonover is set to reappear on September 13, 2023 at 12:00 p.m.
