A Kentucky man was arrested at the Elmira-Corning Regional Airport on Saturday after a suspicious looking item was found in his luggage.
On September 2, the Chemung County Sheriff’s Department responded to the Elmira Corning Regional Airport to assist the Transportation Security Administration with a suspicious item found within the carry-on bag of a passenger. While investigating, Deputies learned that 48-year old Robert L. Winkfield Jr. of Versailles, Kentucky was wanted as a Fugitive from Justice.

Police say while Winkfield was preparing to board a flight and while the TSA personnel was inspecting his carry-on bag, TSA observed what appeared to be a firearm. The item was found to a butane lighter which resembled a firearm. As the investigation continued, Deputies learned that there was an active arrest warrant for Winkfield issued by Fayette County District Court in Kentucky for Assault in the Second Degree.
Winkfield was taken into custody and was arraigned in the Town of Horseheads Court and remanded to the Chemung County Jail. He will appear in Chemung County Court at a later date for an extradition hearing.
