CORNING – A Corning woman has been arrested for providing false documentation to Social Services in Steuben County.

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on Wednesday, deputies of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office arrested 56 year old Sonja J. Covell of Corning. In September 2022, Ms. Covell allegedly knowingly and with intent to defraud, presented false documents to the Steuben County Department of Social Services and received $376 in benefits she was not entitled to.
Covell was charged with Falsifying Business Record in the First Degree, a class E Felony and Petit Larceny. Ms. Covell was arrested due to an outstanding Warrant of Arrest, arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Court and remanded to Steuben County Jail on no bail.
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Steuben County Department of Social Services Fraud and Legal Affairs Unit, and the District Attorney’s Office.
