Waverly School District To Receive $2.75M In Government Funding

WAVERLY – Earlier this week,Congressmen Nick Langworthy (NY-23) and Marc Molinaro (NY-19) announced a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development Grant for the Waverly Central School District in the amount of $2,750,113.

This grant is intended for the operation of the Chemung Center for Innovation, including purchasing new equipment like Aquaculture supplies, computers, and software.

“This significant investment in the Chemung Center for Innovation will ensure that future students have access to quality education and job training opportunities,”said Congressman Langworthy.“This new facility sets out to provide students with the skills to succeed in sectors across our local economy from agriculture to manufacturing. I’m proud to work with Congressman Molinaro and local leaders to secure this grant and position our region to be a future leader in innovation.”

The $2.75 million grant marks a significant milestone for the Chemung community and the school district, said Dr. Keith Eric Knolles, Superintendent of the Waverly Central School District.

“This generous grant will pave the way for the establishment of the Chemung Innovation Center in Chemung, NY, showcasing a commitment to advancing education in key sectors. The project’s emphasis on providing students with access to coursework in agriculture, clean energy, drone technology, and engineering is not only timely but also reflects a forward-thinking approach to education,” said Knolles. “By investing in these critical fields, the initiative not only supports the growth and diversification of the local economy but also ensures that students are well-equipped with the skills needed for the jobs of the future. We are grateful for the partnership from the USDA and the opportunity this will provide for our students and community.”

According to the UDSA, the Community Facilities Direct Loan & Grant Program aims to provide affordable funding to develop essential community facilities in rural areas. An essential community facility is defined as a facility that provides an essential service to the local community for the orderly development of the community in a primarily rural area and does not include private, commercial, or business undertakings.
